Ingredients

  • 10 slices bread Texas Toast
  • ¾ cup milk
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tbsp white sugar
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 tbsp butter

Cinnamon Sugar Topping

  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp white sugar
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • butter

Instructions

  • Combine the flour and milk in a medium bowl, and mix well.
  • Whisk in the eggs and vanilla until completely combined
  • Add in the sugars, cinnamon and salt
  • Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  • Dip the bread slices in the egg mixture until they are evenly coated.
  • Add to your skillet and cook until golden brown on each side (about 2-3 minutes per side)
  • Remove to a plate, butter the top of the French toast, and dip into the cinnamon sugar topping.

Notes

  • Make sure to use a thick slice of bread (Texas toast, brioche, French, or Italian bread) that is not fresh. It helps if it's a couple of days old, so it's not as soft.
  • Use flour as it thickens the batter, helping it to stick to the bread, making the French toast soft and fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside.
  • To avoid your French toast tasting "too eggy" use more milk in your batter, and also whisk your batter until everything is well combined. Use a fork to ensure that the batter runs freely through the tines of the fork.
  • Only dip the bread in the batter for a few seconds so that it doesn't get too soggy.
  • To make things easier, I like to dip all of the bread in the egg/milk mixture and then set them on a baking sheet so they are ready to cook.
  • Prepare your cinnamon sugar mixture ahead of time. Once the French toast is removed from the heat, add the butter so it melts and the cinnamon sugar sticks to the French toast.
