We all know how crazy busy mornings can be. Many times, we may skip breakfast because we just don’t have time to prepare something. This is why overnight oats have become my new favorite quick and easy breakfast.
One of the reasons I love overnight oats, besides the fact that they are so delicious, is that they can be made up ahead of time and enjoyed throughout the week, which is a huge time-saver. Plus, it’s a super quick, grab-and-go breakfast that is not only nutritious but kid-friendly.
However, I will admit that as much as I love them now, I was hesitant to try overnight oats at first. While oatmeal is my go-to breakfast during the winter months, I wasn’t sure I would like to eat it cold. I will say it did take some getting used to. But, honestly, I felt the same way about iced coffee when I first tried it, and now it’s one of my favorite treats.
If you’ve never heard of overnight oats before, I thought I would share some helpful tips that I’ve learned along the way as well as some deliciously easy recipes you can try.
What Are Overnight Oats?
Overnight oats are basically oatmeal that you don’t have to cook because the fridge does all the work for you. You simply combine all your ingredients in a jar, cover it, and place it in the refrigerator overnight. Then, take it out of the fridge the next morning, stir, add your toppings, and enjoy.
Why You Will Love Overnight Oats
- Great for meal prep, as you can make it on Sunday to enjoy all week long.
- Uses simple ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry.
- Perfect breakfast option for busy mornings.
- It’s packed with protein to keep you full longer.
- Super easy to customize, as you can make endless variations.
- Most recipes only take 5 minutes to prepare.
- It promotes healthy cholesterol levels.
- Easy to take on the go.
- Saves you time in the kitchen.
- So delicious that even kids like them.
What Can You Put in Overnight Oats?
Besides all the wonderful benefits of overnight oats that I listed above, they are also a very affordable breakfast option. You may already have most of the ingredients in your fridge or pantry, so it’s the perfect way to use up fruit and other ingredients that you have on hand. Here are a few options you can put in your overnight oats:
- Liquids: milk, almond milk, oat milk, coconut milk, and soy milk (you can also use yogurt).
- Fruit: strawberries, blueberries, bananas, raspberries, peaches, pineapples, etc.
- Sweeteners: honey, maple syrup, brown sugar, or stevia.
- Flavors: cinnamon, vanilla, or anything you’d like.
- Toppings: raisins, nuts, peanut butter, chocolate chips, etc.
You can also add in protein powder, flaxseed, and chia seeds if you’d like.
Are Overnight Oats Healthy?
Yes, overnight oats can be considered a healthy breakfast or snack option as oatmeal provides protein, fiber, and whole grains. Just as long as you are not adding extra sugar or extra flavorings that are full of calories, overnight oats are a great, wholesome breakfast choice.
Do They Have to Be Chilled Overnight?
If you want your overnight oats to have the most flavor and creamy consistency (as they need time to soak up all the liquid), then overnight is recommended.
However, if you are short on time, it is still possible to enjoy your overnight oats earlier. When using rolled or old-fashioned oats (recommended), keep them in the fridge for at least 3 hours.
If using quick oats, it may only take a couple of hours in the fridge, but keep in mind that they will have a different texture with a softer, more mushy consistency.
Steel oats are not usually recommended for overnight oats because they require a lot of liquid to make them soft. But, if you don’t mind chewier oatmeal, then they may work in a pinch.
Can You Warm Overnight Oats?
Yes, although overnight oats are meant to be eaten cold, you can definitely warm your overnight oats if you prefer them that way. Just microwave them for about 30 seconds or so until heated through.
How Long Do Overnight Oats Last?
Overnight oats can last up to 4-5 days in the fridge. However, keep in mind that the longer they sit, the softer and thicker they get. So, you may need to add a little more liquid after day 3.
