One of our most anticipated traditions in the fall is visiting a local apple orchard and picking our own apples. There is just something special about spending a crisp autumn day walking through the orchard and filling our bags with fresh apples. Of course, the hardest part is deciding what to do with all those delicious apples once we get home.

Luckily, I have a few tried and true apple recipes that we enjoy, that include our caramel apple crisp muffins, apple spice donuts, homemade applesauce, and this easy apple crisp recipe that I have been making for years.  It combines apples that are tossed in cinnamon sugar and then topped with a buttery oatmeal crumble. It’s the perfect fall treat that my whole family loves.

How to Make This Simple Apple Crisp

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease an 8×8-inch baking dish.
  2. Add your sliced apples, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon to a bowl. Toss until the apples are evenly coated. Then, spread in the baking dish.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, oats, sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold butter pieces and using your fingertips, work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture is crumbly.
  4. Sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the apples.
  5. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  6. Let the apple crisp cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Helpful Tips

  • Make sure to use cold butter as your topping could end up being too soft instead of crumbly.
  • Try to slice your apples evenly so they will cook at the same rate.
  • Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Variations

  • Add in some pecans or walnuts into the crisp topping for some extra crunch.
  • Try different apples like McIntosh (slice a little thicker), Honeycrisp, Gala, or Granny Smith (may need more sugar).
  • Drizzle caramel sauce over the warm apple crisp before serving.
  • Stir in some raisins or dried cranberries into the apples for a little extra sweetness.

Storage

  • Cover the leftover apple crisp and refrigerate for 3-4 days.
