Summertime is all about lazy days, BBQs, summer parties, camping trips, and fun family activities. And, since it feels like we spend the majority of our time outdoors during the summer, we find ourselves adding a lot more grilling recipes to our weekly meal plan. Not to mention, simple dump-and-go crockpot meals, and quick air fryer meals (to keep the house cool).
Recently, I have been loving outdoor griddle cooking. You may have heard of Blackstone griddles as they are super popular right now. They make backyard cookouts during the summer quick and easy. Plus, these family-friendly griddle recipes are perfect for busy weeknights and feeding a crowd at your next summer party.
What is the difference between a grill and a griddle?
The griddle and grill are both great options for outdoor cooking, especially in the summer. However, despite having similarities, such as the ability to cook your food outdoors at a higher temperature(for quick meals), plus being able to cook many different foods at once, there are also a few differences.
The biggest one is that when grilling, your food is cooked over an open flame on grates. The griddle, on the other hand, is similar to cooking on a skillet but with a much larger surface. Also, a grill will give you a nice char, unlike a griddle that allows for more even browning on your foods.
Why we love our outdoor griddle for summer cooking
Using an outdoor griddle has been one of our favorite ways to cook this summer. We love the ability to cook large amounts of food at once, making clean-up in the kitchen almost non-existent. Plus, it keeps the house cool because we are not cooking indoors. Also, if you have picky eaters in your family like I do, who don’t like their food cooked over an open flame then cooking on a griddle is a great alternative.
What are some alternatives to using a Blackstone griddle?
Due to their popularity, Blackstone griddles are everywhere these days, and for good reason. They make flat-top grilling so easy, plus there are so many size options. They even have a portable tabletop option to take on the go, or a bigger option that includes an air fryer.
However, they can still be pricey and if you already have a grill, you may be wondering if a griddle is worth the extra space and money. If this is the case, you might want to try some budget-friendly options instead to see if you will use it enough to justify the cost.
Luckily, there are a few less expensive options if you want to try cooking on an outdoor flat-top griddle. If you already have a grill, you can purchase a griddle insert for your grill. You can also purchase a cast-iron griddle. The best part of cast iron skillets or griddles is that they can be used on a stovetop or on a camping trip for easy meals.
How can you make cooking on a flat-top griddle healthier?
When you think of griddle cooking the first thing that may come to mind is greasy and unhealthy foods. Although it’s delicious, it’s not so great for you. But, there are definitely ways that you can make cooking on the griddle healthier. Since you can control the ingredients, choose healthy oils like avocado oil to cook with instead of butter or margarine. Also, focus on leaner cuts of protein like chicken or turkey and include lots of veggies and whole grain options.
