“The first step in crafting the life you want is to get rid of everything you don’t.”-Joshua Becker

When most people think of decluttering, the first thing that pops into their minds is how overwhelming the whole process can be. From the beginning, and not knowing how to start, to struggling with how to let things go.

However, just because it may seem intimidating doesn’t mean it can’t be done. Decluttering doesn’t have to be so hard or overwhelming. You just need to take that first small step.

It’s important to remember that you don’t have to declutter your entire home on a weekend. That’s unrealistic. As much as we would all like to have it done as quickly as possible, it’s better to create a plan and work on decluttering slowly in bite-sized pieces. You can spend as little as 10 minutes a day decluttering in your home.

The goal is to make sure decluttering works around your schedule because you will be more likely to feel motivated to keep going if the process is less overwhelming to deal with.

Why is decluttering so important?

When you have less stuff hanging around then you have less stress. A clutter-free home provides peace of mind so you can enjoy being there.  Here are some other benefits to decluttering:

  • It can save you money– when you take the time to declutter in your home, you start to become aware of everything being brought into your home. After spending so much time trying to get rid of the clutter then usually the last thing you want to do is add more clutter. It saves you money because you start to pay attention to what you are buying.
  • Makes organizing your home easier– making an effort to declutter in your home frees up space so you can start being more organized. Once the clutter is out of the way, you can make sure everything in your home has a place.
  • Decluttering saves you time- you are able to find things much quicker when your home is uncluttered.  Think about how much easier it would be not to have to look through a mess just to find one simple thing.
  • It helps you keep your home consistently clean– it’s easier to keep your home clean every day when you have taken the time to keep it clutter-free. You can begin to establish daily routines and start forming habits to keep a tidy home that you look forward to spending time in.

Before You Begin to Declutter in Your Home

The hardest part of decluttering is always the beginning but once you figure out how you want to approach it, it becomes much easier. Make a plan and decide how much time you want to devote to decluttering each day. If you are feeling motivated and ready to jump in head first, then try a 30 Day Decluttering Challenge.

But, if it all feels too overwhelming then pick one item from the list to do every day for 10-20 minutes depending on how much time you have. Spend a few minutes and look over this list of 106 things to declutter in your home and write down the places you want to concentrate on first. Start there. Then, once they are complete write down a few more things.

Once you’ve decided how you are going to declutter, then it’s time to grab trash bags (if you plan to do it quickly) or some bins if you are going to declutter gradually. Label the bins, so that you have one for items to toss, keep, donate, and sell.

Now that you are ready to start, here is the list of 106 easy things you can declutter in your home today.
