There is no doubt about it, chocolate chip cookies are a classic recipe that everyone enjoys. They are my absolute favorite cookie. However, there are so many variations of this delicious cookie.
Some people like them crispy, some like them chewy and then others like myself prefer them thick and soft. I have spent a lot of time experimenting to get the softest, yummiest chocolate chip cookie and this recipe is the best.
How to achieve the perfect soft chocolate chip cookie
- One of the most important things you can do is to add your butter when it is at room temperature. If this isn’t possible then you can pop it in the microwave for less than 20 seconds for 2 sticks but keep an eye on it so it doesn’t melt. When the butter melts, it will cause the cookies to spread out while baking making them flat.
- Avoid placing dough on a warm cookie sheet because it will also cause the cookies to spread out. I use two cookie sheets while one batch is baking. I have the next batch on the other cookie sheet waiting to go in.
- When you add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix them up, make sure it’s a thicker consistency. It shouldn’t be too wet. It should be thick enough to almost roll into a ball without being too sticky. Don’t be afraid to add a little more flour to get the right consistency. This will make sure your cookies turn out soft and thick.
- Lastly, make sure your oven is preheated to ensure that your cookies come out perfectly every time you bake them.

When cookies are done, cool for 2 minutes and then remove them from the cookie sheet to a wire baking rack.
