Is your bedroom causing you unwanted stress and anxiety because clutter has taken over? Your closet is overflowing with clothes, your dresser is packed so full that you can barely get the drawers closed most days and your bedside table looks like something exploded on top of it.
Unfortunately, the bedroom can often be overlooked when cleaning or decluttering our homes. We tend to concentrate on places in our home that require more of our attention, such as the kitchen and the bathroom.
As a result, the bedroom becomes the place where we dump all the things we can’t find space for in other parts of the house. Whether we are stuffing it in the back of the closet or under the bed. Since it’s out of sight, we put it out of our minds.
But, the longer we do this, the more the clutter starts building up until we have no other choice but to deal with the mess because it starts to take a toll on our mental health.
Why should you declutter your bedroom?
Let’s face it, your bedroom should be peaceful and calming, it shouldn’t be full of clutter and chaos. It’s the last place you see before you close your eyes and go to sleep at night so if you think about it, clearing the clutter will not only clear your space but clear your mind to help you relax and fall asleep more easily.
Here are a few other reasons to declutter your bedroom:
- It makes cleaning easier– since you don’t have to clean around things, you can do a much better job.
- You are able to save time– you know where everything is so you don’t have to constantly look for lost items.
- It can save you money– once you declutter your closet and drawers, it forces you to start paying attention to what you are buying and adding back into your wardrobe since you spent so much time getting rid of the clutter in the first place.
Some things to ask yourself when decluttering
There is no question that decluttering can be a huge undertaking. You can feel overwhelmed one minute and guilty for not wanting to let go the next despite knowing how beneficial it will be for your mental health.
In order to make the process go more smoothly so you can be more successful in your decluttering journey, you may want to ask yourself a few questions when deciding what to get rid of, and what to keep. Such as:
- Have I worn/used this item in the past year? If not, then it is very likely that you won’t and you should think about donating the item. The only exception to this rule is if it’s an expensive piece of clothing that you only wear for special occasions and you know will be worn again in the future.
- Do I have enough space to store it? I live in a small home so where I may have to be more selective about what I can keep, you may have a larger closet or bigger space to work with allowing you to be a little bit pickier. But, either way, make sure that you are only keeping the items that you love and find useful.
- Would I buy this item again? When deciding to keep or let go, think about whether or not you would purchase the item again. Sometimes, we may buy something on impulse because it’s trendy or because we saw it on social media. But, that doesn’t mean it reflects our personal style.
- Is the item in good condition? Inspect the item to see if there are any tears or holes, if so there is really no reason to keep the item especially when it’s taking up valuable space.
A few helpful decluttering tips before you begin
Although clearing the clutter can be challenging, there are many ways to make the process easier so you don’t end up making any decluttering mistakes along the way. Here are a few things you should do when you start to declutter.
Be Prepared
Before you begin decluttering your bedroom, it’s helpful to gather a few boxes, and trash bags to separate your items. Use the boxes for donations and items that you want to sell. Then, use the trash bags for items that are in poor condition that will need to be tossed.

Start Small
The best way to be successful with decluttering is to start small so you don’t get overwhelmed. Decluttering is a huge endeavor and you may find that you are motivated to declutter one day and then it is too stressful to even think about the next.
So, breaking it up into smaller chunks makes it easier to continue because you are only concentrating on that one area. For example, you can decide to declutter your dresser the first week, and only commit to decluttering one drawer at a time.
If you want to continue after that one drawer you can but only commit to one so it’s not so overwhelming. Another option is to add it to your weekly cleaning routine if you have one. So, for example in my cleaning routine, I clean bedrooms on Monday. After dusting and vacuuming the bedrooms, I add in a couple of small decluttering tasks to stay on top of the clutter.

- Make a point to go through your clothes every season. So, when you are putting away your winter clothes, decide what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of. Then, just do the same thing with your spring/summer clothing.
- Turn your hangers around. A clever decluttering hack is to turn your hangers backward so you can see the clothes that you are actually wearing on a regular basis.
