Why You Will Love Kielbasa With Peppers, Onions and Noodles

Kielbasa with peppers and onions has quickly become one of our new favorite quick and easy dinners. I love that with just a few simple ingredients I can have a kid-friendly dinner on the table in no time. My family is always requesting that I add it to our meal plan because of how hearty and delicious it is. Here are a few reasons why I think you will love this super easy recipe.

  • Quick to prepare– it’s an effortless meal that requires minimal prep making it perfect to prepare on busy nights when you need dinner on the table fast.
  • Family-friendly- this recipe got two thumbs up from both my boys and being picky eaters that is a huge win.
  • Frugal- this is the perfect recipe if you are trying to save money on your groceries because there are so few ingredients.
  • Easy to customize- you can easily change up this recipe by omitting the onions and adding potatoes, or zucchini instead. You can also use chicken or turkey sausage instead of the kielbasa to make it healthier.
  • Clean-up is a breeze– since the kielbasa, peppers, and onions cook in one pan, it makes cleaning up after dinner quick and easy.

Ingredients For This Skillet Kielbasa Recipe

How to Make Kielbasa With Onions and Peppers Over Noodles

Start by adding a tablespoon of olive oil to a skillet and set to medium-high. Add your sliced multi-color bell peppers and onion to the pan. Sprinkle with garlic powder, salt, and pepper, then cook until crisp and tender.

While cooking the onions and peppers (make sure to stir occasionally so the peppers don’t get too charred), Boil egg noodles according to the directions on the package.

Add your sliced kielbasa (cut into quarters) to the skillet with the peppers and onions and cook for 3-4 minutes or until warmed through.

When your egg noodles are cooked, drain them and add them back to the pot. Add 3-4 tablespoons of butter to the pot and stir to melt.

Add in a teaspoon of garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste, and ¼ cup of parmesan cheese (we like cheese so we tend to add a little more), then stir to combine.

Serve the kielbasa mixture over hot egg noodles and sprinkle with additional parmesan cheese. Serve and enjoy!

Storage and Leftovers

  • You can store any leftovers from the kielbasa, peppers, and onion skillet as well as the garlic-buttered noodles in the fridge for 3 days in a covered airtight container.
  • To heat the leftovers, we just microwave them for a couple of minutes or until warmed through. You could also reheat them over low in a skillet.

How to Customize this Kielbasa Skillet Recipe

Although we love this recipe exactly as it is, many smoked sausage recipes recommend that you cook your sausage first before adding your peppers and onions. However, my son doesn’t like his meat charred so we have always cooked our kielbasa skillets this way. If you would like to change it up, this recipe works either way. Here are a few more substitutions and variations you can try.

  • Replace the kielbasa with different types of sausage such as chicken or turkey sausage to make the recipe healthier. You can also use Italian sausage or any other sausage you prefer, however, if it’s not precooked you will have to cook your sausage in the skillet before adding the vegetables or cook them separately and combine them later.
  • You can switch out the vegetables if you don’t like onions or peppers. (we make this recipe with zucchini and love it!) I share how we make this in my Best 20-Minute Meals for Busy Weeknights post.
  • If you don’t like egg noodles, you can try this recipe with penne or linguine instead.
  • Add in some red pepper flakes if you like your food spicy and want to give it a little kick.
  • When it comes to the garlic, I will use whatever I have on hand (mostly garlic powder). However, if you prefer fresh or minced garlic you can use that instead. Just add the garlic first with the olive oil before adding your peppers and onions to the kielbasa skillet. For the butter garlic noodles, melt the butter in a skillet, add the minced garlic, and cook for a couple of minutes before adding to the noodles.
  • Try cooking this recipe on the grill. Foil-pack dinners are a must, especially in the summer months because they are so easy to prepare. Simply combine your ingredients (sausage, onions, and peppers) we also add potato slices to a piece of heavy-duty aluminum foil with some butter and then fold up the aluminum foil and grill until potatoes are tender and vegetables are cooked through.

  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ cup parmesan cheese grated
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add your sliced multi-color bell peppers and onion to the skillet. Sprinkle with garlic powder, salt, and pepper, then cook until crisp and tender.
  • While peppers and onions are cooking, boil your egg noodles according to directions on package.
  • Add the kielbasa to the skillet with the peppers and onions and cook for 3-4 minutes or until warmed through. *see notes
  • Drain your egg noodles and add them back to the pot. Add 3 tablespoons of butter and stir to melt.
  • Sprinkle egg noodles with garlic powder, parmesan cheese, and salt and pepper to taste, then stir in to combine flavors.
  • Serve kielbasa, peppers, and onions over buttered garlic noodles, and enjoy!

Notes

*After the kielbasa is warmed through, turn it down to low heat otherwise the peppers and onions will overcook.
If you prefer your kielbasa to be more charred, you can cook it first and then add the peppers and onions.
Also, keep in mind this recipe is for pre-cooked smoked sausage. If you decide to use Italian sausage or any other type of uncooked sausage it will take longer to cook so it should be browned before adding the vegetables.
