Despite being one of the smallest rooms in the house, the bathroom seems to be the place that I procrastinate decluttering the most. Most likely because there are so many small items to go through and I always think it’s going to take so much time.
When in reality, it always goes fairly quickly because you are not dealing with sentimental items like when you are decluttering your bedroom. And, honestly, that is what slows people down the most when it comes to clearing the clutter in their homes.
Decluttering becomes too overwhelming to deal with so they give up. Luckily there are a few helpful things that can help motivate you so you are more successful at decluttering your bathroom.

3 Things to Do Before You Start to Declutter Your Bathroom
Here are a few beginner decluttering tips to do before you begin so you don’t make any common decluttering mistakes that can halt your progress.
Make a plan
The first thing I like to do when starting a decluttering project, whether it’s the bathroom or even the kitchen is to make a plan. As we know decluttering can be so stressful especially when you don’t know where to begin. A 30-day decluttering challenge can help with that because it sets a realistic timeline of what to focus on during those 30 days.
Of course, you can always make your own list or use the free bathroom decluttering checklist below. Then, it’s just deciding when you can fit it into your day. I like to add my decluttering tasks to my weekly cleaning routine. But, find what works for you and your home.
Decluttering is not a race as long as you are putting in the effort then you will be successful. Remember progress is progress no matter how small.
Gather your supplies
Once you’ve made a plan and figured out when you are going to start decluttering your bathroom, it’s time to start gathering your supplies.
Whenever you decide to declutter any room in your home, it’s helpful to sort your items into 3-4 different categories: items to toss, donate/sell or keep. Just grab a garbage bag or box to put your items into while you are deciding what to do with them.

Questions to ask yourself
Once, I’ve made a plan, and then gathered my boxes to divide my items into, then it’s time to think about the type of questions I need to ask myself to make decluttering my bathroom easier such as:
- Am I going to use this again?
- Do I have duplicates?
- Is it something I need?
- Does the product work for me?
- Is it expired?

Clean as you go
Once you start the decluttering process in your bathroom and you’re pulling things out of the medicine cabinet, drawers, and off shelves, take a few minutes to do a deep cleaning of the areas. Make sure to remove any dirt, dust, or debris before putting the items you want to keep back in.

Bathroom Decluttering Checklist: 35 Things to Declutter in Your Bathroom
Now, that you are aware of a few helpful decluttering tips, it’s time to start decluttering the bathroom. Here are the areas and things you should be focusing on:

Medicine Cabinet
Dispose of anything that is empty, has expired or you no longer have use for. Here are a few examples of what to declutter from your medicine cabinet:
- Medications
- Vitamins
- First Aid
- Toothpaste
- Toothbrushes*
*it’s recommended you change your toothbrush every 3 months.

Skin Care Products
Do you have a drawer full of skin care products that didn’t work for you but you feel too guilty to let them go because they were so costly? Try to remind yourself of how much space they are taking up and offer them to a family or friend so they can get used up and not wasted before they expire.
A few skin care products you may have on hand are:
- Bath gel/shower gel
- Soaps
- Body scrubs
- Face cleansers, masks, and creams
- Body lotion
- Hand lotion/cream
- Sunscreen
- Deodorant
- Perfume/cologne or body spray
Don’t forget you can save some space by combining two of the same products that are almost empty. Sometimes, we have a tendency when we are getting low on a product to purchase a new one and start using that before using up the older product. Combining them together will not only save space but eliminate waste as well.

Cosmetics
Toss any make-up products that have expired, dried out, or you haven’t used in a while such as:
- Foundation/ concealer/ face primer/powder
- Blush/highlighters/bronzers
- Eye shadow, mascara, and eyebrow pencils
- Lip products such as lipsticks, gloss, liners, and lip balm
- Makeup brushes
- Nail products (nail polish, and nail polish remover)

Hair Products
Do you have a lot of duplicate hair products that you don’t use? Keep the ones you like best and get rid of the rest. Here are a few hair products that you might have hanging around:
- Shampoo
- Conditioner
- Gel/mousse or hair spray
- Hair treatments
- Brushes/ combs
- Hair accessories such as hair ties, clips, hair bands, etc.
- Hair dryer, straighteners, curling irons
Grooming Tools
Throw out anything that has become dull or out of date.
- Razors
- Shaving Cream
Travel Size Products/Samples
You may be surprised just how many travel-size products and samples you’ve kept. If you know you are not going to use them, then they are just taking up space so consider giving them to a friend or tossing what you are not going to use up.

Linen Closet
Go through your linen closet and get rid of anything that has stains, is torn, or you don’t like or have use for anymore such as:
- Towels
- Wash clothes
- Hand towels
Cleaning Supplies
Go through your cleaning supplies, and toss anything that is almost empty or doesn’t work well.

Bath Toys/Children’s Bath Products
If you have young children, go through bath toys and bath products and get rid of anything that hasn’t been used in a while or has expired.

Then, just work your way down the list until everything thing has been decluttered. Of course, find what works for you. You don’t have to do it all in a week but making a goal and setting aside a small amount of time every day will help you be more successful on your decluttering journey.

How to Maintain Your Bathroom After You’ve Decluttered
Now, that you’ve decluttered your bathroom, it’s important to find ways to organize it so that the clutter doesn’t creep back in. Here are a few organizing hacks to keep your bathroom clutter-free:
- Reorganize your linen closet. Once you’ve cleaned out what you no longer use or need, decide if you can use the space for extra items such as toilet paper, kleenex, etc. If you still don’t have the space, try adding a shelf above your door to store extra items you want to keep on hand.
- Use storage baskets or hooks to store hair dryers and other hair products.
- Get a corner storage caddy to store shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in the bathtub/shower.
- Use hooks to hang up towels that you use on a regular basis. If you don’t have the space, invest in over-the-door hooks.
- Organize your counters, making sure to only keep out products that you use frequently. This storage caddy is perfect for keeping things off counters.
- Use inexpensive storage bins and trays from Dollar Tree to organize your bathroom cabinets and drawers.
- To make things easier when cleaning your home, keep a cleaning caddy under your sink or in your linen closet filled with your favorite cleaning products.
- Keep cotton swabs, and cotton balls in a mason jar on your sink or a nearby shelf for easy access.
