How to Be a More Organized Mom

Get up early

Make it a priority to set your alarm to wake up early during the weekdays. As a mom, being able to have a few minutes of quiet to sip your coffee, check your email, exercise, or just enjoy the peacefulness of the morning is so beneficial.

You could also use this time to get ready for the day. Take a shower and get dressed without all the stress from having to figure out how to make time between juggling breakfast and getting the kids ready for school.

No matter how you choose to spend your morning, you will find being able to take it at a more leisurely pace will help you start your day in a more positive way.

Start your day with a morning routine

While waking up early may be the perfect way to start your day in a more relaxed way, a morning routine is one of the best ways to jumpstart your day.  You can use your morning routine to map out what you hope to accomplish throughout your day. A few things that I will do in my morning routine every day is:

  • Start by making my bed. I know it may sound crazy but making your bed will actually motivate you to be more productive because you have already accomplished one easy task for the day.
  • Decide what to have for dinner and take it out. I love using make-ahead freezer meals ( they are a great way to save time in the kitchen). All I have to do is throw it in the crockpot for a quick and easy dinner that I don’t even have to think about. Here are some of my favorite crockpot recipes if you need a little dinner inspiration this week.
  • Look over my planner so I know what I need to tackle for the week and make a list of the tasks to focus on.
  • Make breakfast which is usually just a quick grab-and-go breakfast to save time. When my boys were younger, I would also take a few minutes to grab their snacks from our snack bin to pack with their lunches for school.
  • Lastly, I start my morning cleaning routine. Since it only includes 5 quick tasks it doesn’t take very long to complete.

Use cleaning checklists

After my morning cleaning routine, I will usually take a few minutes to look over my cleaning checklists, which consist of my daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning routines so I can keep my home consistently clean. Although it may seem like a lot, routines are the perfect organizational hack.

Cleaning routines and checklists have completely changed the way I clean my home. They have allowed me to stay on top of my cleaning tasks so I am able to avoid becoming overwhelmed.

Just using simple cleaning habits, and my weekly cleaning routine has helped me stay motivated so I am getting more done throughout my week.

Stay on top of the clutter

One of the best organizing tips is to keep clutter under control and it’s not as hard as you might think. Just taking a few minutes to do these simple tasks will help you stay on top of the mess.

  • Never leave a room empty-handed– do a quick scan before you leave the room and take anything out that doesn’t belong.
  • Stay on top of paper clutter– mail, school papers, and magazines can quickly get out of control if you are not keeping up with them. So, try and deal with it the minute it comes into your home so it’s not piling up.
  • Make sure everything has a place- when everyone in the family knows where items belong they are more likely to take care of them. I love using storage bins and shoe organizers in my home to help keep things tidy.

Set up a command center

An easy way to stay on top of paper clutter is to set up a command center in your home. It will help you stay organized as everyone in the family will know where to look for appointments, school schedules, cleaning checklists, and chore charts.

Keep in mind that a command center doesn’t have to be elaborate, it can be as simple as a home binder full of important information, a dry-erase calendar on the refrigerator, and a mail organizer.

As long it’s functional and works for your family’s needs then that is all that matters.

Meal plan to save time and money

A meal plan is a great way to stay organized. Planning out your meals in advance for the week or even meal planning for the month (which is what I like to do), saves you so much time and money.

You know exactly what to purchase for groceries and it helps keep your pantry stocked so you avoid any last-minute scrambling trying to figure out what to eat for dinner.

Some of the ways that I make meal planning even easier is by using theme night dinners such as Pizza Friday’s or Taco Tuesday’s. I also like to list all of my family’s favorite meals (you can find the free printable here) for inspiration when I sit down to start planning out my meals.

Meal planning isn’t just an ideal way to stay organized but it is a great way to save money on groceries. If you’ve never tried meal planning before, here are some beginner tips to get started.

Plan on Sunday for the week ahead

Sunday is the perfect day to sit down and plan for the week ahead. I like to write down any appointments that are coming up throughout the week, as well as any sports activities or work deadlines.  Don’t forget to jot down important tasks or goals for the week.

Choose a planner that works for you

Without a doubt, I would have to say my planner is my number one organizational tool. And I will admit I’m slightly obsessed. I use my planner to keep track of everything-work, meals, household chores, bills, and appointments.

If you have another system to keep track of these things such as a binder or a file system then a simple monthly planner or calendar may be all that you need to help you stay organized. However, if you are like me and love planners. Here are a few budget-friendly options that I have tried over the years and recommend:

Try time blocking to be more productive

Have you ever heard of time blocking? Basically, it’s just planning out your day in blocks. You can be more flexible with time blocking and only break up your days into mornings, afternoons, and evenings.  Or, you can be more specific and divide your days into time segments. You can find some time-blocking examples here.

I discovered time block scheduling a few years ago when I first started working from home. I was having difficulty managing my time so I was looking for a way that would not only motivate me but help me stay on task and be more organized.

Keep a running to-do list

Lists are one of those things that can help you be more organized because you have a clear path of what needs to be completed.  You can use a notepad, a notebook, or even an app on your phone to help you stay focused on what you want to get done for the day.

You can make your to-do list during your morning routine (which is what I like to do) or you may prefer to do it the night before. Either way, just make sure you are highlighting the tasks that are most important for the day so that you are making them a priority.

Delegate chores

In order to be a more organized mom, you need to delegate some of the chores to family members so your time is spent on more important tasks.  Try using chore charts or responsibility charts to encourage kids to be consistent about keeping their rooms clean as well as helping with other household jobs.

Prepare the night before

Just as a morning routine is important to start your day, a night routine is basically an extension of your morning routine. A night routine helps to make your morning more productive because you are already a few steps ahead.

A night routine can be as simple as taking a few minutes to tidy up (try using my nightly cleaning routine), deciding what to prepare for breakfast the next morning, and checking calendars for appointments or activities.

It can also include signing any school papers for your kiddos and getting lunches ready and backpacks waiting by the door. Try to encourage your kids to pick out their school clothes for the next day so there are no last-minute outfit changes and indecisions waiting for you in the morning.

Take breaks to recharge

Remember you can’t pour from an empty cup. As a mom, it’s so easy to get burnt out with everything that has to be done. You try so hard to be everything for everyone but that just isn’t possible because you can’t do it all.

Taking a few minutes every now and then to relax will help you to recharge throughout the day so you are ready to jump back into your daily tasks.

Hopefully, adding in a few (or all) of these small habits will help you become a more organized mom. I know that these tips have helped me be more productive and organized throughout my day.
